Several cars broken into at apartment complex
WICHITA, Kansas – More than a dozen residents at a West Wichita apartment complex have fallen victim to vandalism.
People woke up this morning to find their car windows smashed, but practically nothing was stolen.
Ron Garrens showed KSN around his Jeep Liberty Saturday afternoon.
The driver’s side windows on his SUV were smashed, but nothing was removed from his vehicle.
"It looked like a random act of just vandalism,” Garrens said. “[It looks] like they were going through knocking out the glass."
His vehicle was one of 11 reported by Saturday afternoon at Newport Apartments leaving Garrens and other victims in shock.
“I looked down on the ground and saw glass shattered everywhere,” said Lucas Hershberger, whose truck window was broken out. “Then I looked at the car next to mine and the driver’s side window had been busted out, too."
Apartment management say they have never had anything like this happen at the complex, adding it appears the vandals were smashing into random vehicles.
"Well, it’s very hurtful,” said Betsy Mohr, Newport Apartment. “We want to make sure our residents are cared for and feel safe in their homes; we don't want them to feel not safe or secure."
Several vehicles had nothing taken from inside, while others were ransacked with documents and money taken.
"They stole about 2 or 3 dollars of pocket change," Hershberger said. "It's pure stupidity why someone is going out causing people hundreds of dollars worth of damage to their vehicles, just for a couple of dollars worth of change."
If you notice your vehicle was broken into, call police.
